Welcome to the "Indian Legend" page! This page will provide a number of Indian Tales from various tribes.These are true indian legends told from generations of elders-to one wigwam to the modern day family home. The Indian Legend:
THE BIRCHBARK TALE-(Algonquian) "One day, as Nanahboozhoo (manitoo spirit) was walking along on a sandy shore, he felt very hungry. It was now in the autumn of the year. As he wandered on he saw an object moving toward him. He had not long to wait before he saw that this object was a great black bear. He pulled up a young tree by the roots and hid himself, preparing to kill the bear when he should come near. When the bear came near Nanahboozhoo made a big jump out of his hiding place and killed the bear with one blow. Then he built a big fire, and having singed all the hair off the bear he cut him up and nicely roasted him. When the meat was cooked Nanahboozhoo cut it up into fine pieces, for he intended to enjoy his feast by eating leisurely.........want to read more> CLICK HERE
THE LEGEND OF THE NO FACE DOLLS-(Anishnabe) The Algonquin children were taught great respect for their “Elders” to put a face on a toy of any sort would be disrespectful to the “Elders” and the teachings of the consequences of “vanity” and spirits (believing that putting a face on a doll is like placing a spirit in the doll). The Children of the Woodland Indians often traveled to the different camps from season to season, which made them very lonesome for their friends. So the no face doll provided a way for the children to pretend and imagine their friends faces on the doll. This temporarily gave them companionship and a way to fulfill their lonely time.
LEGEND OF THE DREAMCATCHER:(Ojibway) Long ago in the ancient world of the Ojibwe Nation, the Clans were all located in one general area of that place known as Turtle Island. This is the way that the old Ojibwe storytellers say how Asibikaashi (Spider Woman) helped Wanabozhoo bring giizis (sun) back to the people. To this day, Asibikaashi will build her special lodge before dawn. If you are awake at dawn, as you should be, look for her lodge and you will see this miracle of how she captured the sunrise as the light sparkles on the dew which is gathered there....want to read more> CLICK HERE
